If you have ever watched television, you have seen a commercial expounding on the value of a waterproof watch, light, or even a cell phone. My questions are these: Why do you need a watch that is waterproof unless you are a diver? Why do you need a waterproof light unless you have an occupation which requires one? Why in the name of all that makes sense does anyone need a waterproof phone? Can you talk on it under water????

When it comes to spiritual issues, people are “waterproof.” Those who have been immersed in religion, while sitting in a church, seem to be sealed against the effects that might be enacted by the Holy Spirit. In fact, the seal is so tight against infiltration that the Holy Spirit cannot even move through the slightest crack.

Even though rocks in a lake, river, or pond, are totally immersed in water, when broken in half or cracked in some way, they are dry on the inside. Likewise, many who claim to be followers of Christ are dry on the inside, even though they are immersed in the presence of God’s grace, mercy and love. Like rocks, they are hard and impenetrable.

Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'” 39 When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory. (John 7:37-39)

If you look at your life, could you be described as “spiritually waterproof?” Have you sealed your heart and mind so that nothing God does in your life has a chance of affecting your inner workings? Are you dry inside even though God is all around you? Could you be the commercial example of what it takes to remain unaffected when submersed in the presence, love, grace, and mercy of God?
